Edmonton Aid In Sickness was originally founded in 1953 as Edmonton Aid In Sickness and Nursing Fund. The origins of the fund lie in the ‘Queens’ Nurses Association of Edmonton based at ‘Cornerways’ Nursing Home in Latymer Road.
The finance to build this home was raised by local businesses and residents within the Borough of Edmonton and was maintained by donations and fees for treatment.
With the formation of the National Health Service the need for the home was surpassed and it became redundant. As the house was originally bought through the efforts of the local community a decision was made to sell the house and establish a trust fund (EAIS) and by using this fund, continue to help the residents of Edmonton.
The purpose of the fund then and now is to provide assistance to the sick and poor residents of Edmonton by means of special food, medicines, medical appliances, bedding, fuel, white goods etc.
